Black and White Little Camper Dress

I love making dresses and clothes for Freya, but I think sometimes I fall into the trap of always trying to save the things I make for her to wear for special occasions and not use the things I've made enough for everyday. That's where The Little Camper Dress pattern comes in.

One of my (and my sister's) go to patterns is the Hey There Threads Explorer skirt and we can be partial to the shorts pattern too.  The instructions are clear, they're a quick and easy sew and look great on us and the kids.  The Little Camper Dress was their latest pattern and now I'm a fan of that one too!

The dress is a simple shape with a button placket at the front.  It has the option of short or long sleeves.  The button placket was not like anything I've sewn before but luckily the instructions were fairly clear and there was a video on their website too, which I did refer to.  I was worried I wouldn't be able to line it up properly but it was surprisingly easy and definitely hasn't put me off making this again.  The trickiest thing if I'm honest was tracing the placket.  I didn't have coloured ink and some of the placket pattern wasn't super clear in black and white.

I think the length on this one might be a little short.  It works with leggings and fits OK at the moment but I always like to have a little growing room so with the next one I think I'll lengthen it a bit.

.I used some black and white fabric for the dress and a black fabric for the bias binding and placket.  The pattern asks for you to tuck the bias binding under so you can't see it but I preferred it being visible here.  It's a great simple dress that I can see Freya getting a lot of use from, especially for the everyday times.

  1. Oh Alex! What a cutie! What a lovely dress! What a wonderful review! Thankyou for taking the time to provide such thoughtful and kind feedback. It *is* a short dress and I know that's not for everyone, especially if we want them to last quite a while!
    Thanks again Alex!

  2. Thanks Kathryn, I really do love the pattern and I reckon the dress will last with leggings in the winter. It's such a fine balance between being too short and yet being easy for them to get around in. After seeing her play in it a bit more I think it will be fine, I will definitely be making more :)
